Kylar's Postmortem


Hey, my name is Kylar Poort, and I was a narrative designer as well as an artist for the Case of Elias Granger. For this project I assisted Gavin with the story and did sound design for the environment. The final 3 weeks I also worked with Evelyn and Kyra on creating 3D models.

For narrative I originally was planning on helping give ideas and put my sole focus on modeling and level design, but as we progressed, I found my role in narrative bigger. The first three weeks I worked on narrative with Gavin, Luke, and Jonathan as we shared and gave ideas on how we were going to have the story go. Unfortunately, we didn't have a full story until week 3 as we all were busy and roles shifted. Despite that, I was able to come up with a good 1-page story thanks to ideas from Gavin, Luke, and Jonathan. Also love the amount of depth Jonathan went into with details on the killer, victims, and weapons. I also during this time found audio from Freesound and Pixabay that I added into Unreal. The final three weeks I spent editing the audio to make sure it was polished and working with Kyra and Evelyn on 3D Models. I worked on creating two 3D book models: the Book of Cleansing and the killer's personal bible. Both models were made with Maya and textured with Substance Painter. Thankfully both Evelyn and Kyra were doing great on art, so we got a lot done.

For this project I spent around 29-30 hours working on it. At the beginning of this project, I estimated that I would spend around 35+ hours on it. Unfortunately, some roles changed, and other things personally held me back from contributing even more. Even though I didn't meet my desired time, I still am proud of the work I did and what I learned from the things I don't usually do.

Ultimately, the thing that we struggled with most was putting our ideas together.  Everyone was contributing great ideas, but we couldn't find a concrete solution until three weeks in. Outside of that many of us had a lot of personal things happening, so we were unable to always solve a problem right away. Besides that, I believe we did an amazing job making the game we wanted. Jonathan did a great job as producer and having everything organized with the Miro board. Overall, everybody showed what they could do and handled their task well.
